Abstract
This class will examine the politics of freedom. Major tensions in contemporary political culture will be considered, including who belongs, who votes, and the nature of freedom. Questions and debates considered include: What is the nation? Who belongs to the nation? What is the meaning of freedom in relation to political struggle and the nation? What makes a society democratic? What is populism and what are its key features? Through reading, textual analysis, class discussion, and other class activities, students will begin to grapple with these questions. Students will gain enhanced communicative skills through writing, discussion, and oral presentation of ideas. Students will also gain enhanced analytical skills through textual analysis of popular political discourse and a research paper.
