Summary
Tobacco thrips are consistent insect pests of seedling cotton in the southeastern USA requiring chemical control at planting, but developing insecticide resistance necessitates the use of additional tactics. Cultural control strategies, such as the use of cover crops, reduced tillage operations, delayed planting date, and starter fertilizer, can complement chemical control and likely slow the development of insecticide resistance. Managers of cotton in the region should consider using a multi-tactic approach to control thrips.
