Abstract

As a slave, William Grimes was dragged all over Virginia before he could finally escape from Savannah in 1814. See here his forced movements and the ways in which he was handed over from one master to another, uprooting him every time and severing his local ties. This GIF tries to convey the relentless chaos and lack of control Grimes had over his situation before claiming his own liberation.
