Teaching "Soil Forming Factors: Climate" using an ESRI Story Map

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop an ESRI Story Map “Soil Forming Factors: Climate” for multiple STEM disciplines. This study incorporated a pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design that utilized multiple methods of analysis, including quality assessment of ESRI Story Map using the five principles of effective storytelling, and direct quantitative measures of learning (quiz), and surveys of participants’ perceptions (PowerPoint presentation versus ESRI Story Map) using QualtricsTM. The survey results are summarized by gender, academic classification (year), and academic major program. Newly developed ESRI Story Map was an effective teaching tool as demonstrated by quiz scores and students’ positive responses. There was a statistically significant increase in familiarity scores from pre-testing scores of “not at all familiar” (M=1.36, SD=0.77) to post-testing scores of “somewhat familiar” (M=3.31, SD=0.79), t (44)=-14.133, p=0.000 (two-tailed) indicating the effectiveness of the ESRI Story Map laboratory exercise for students of all majors, gender, and academic levels. An eta-squared statistic (0.82) indicated a large effect size. There were also statistically significant increases in familiarity scores within individual groups by gender, major, and academic classification (year).
