Abstract
The purpose of the 2012 BIKE Plan is to make Charleston an example for the Southeast by improving the bicycling environment. The 2012 BIKE Plan provides both action and master planning elements that will guide bicycle improvements throughout the City of Charleston over the next few years.
Past planning efforts in the City of Charleston have resulted in a significant base of off street bicycle and pedestrian paths throughout the city and numerous bicycle parking facilities on the peninsula. However, thus far, efforts by the City have been fragmented and most plans supporting bicycle issues have lacked political, public or financial support necessary for their full implementation. The 2012 BIKE Plan will help eliminate that fragmentation and begin the institutionalization of bicycle planning. The plan makes a series of recommendations that will increase the number bicycle facilities, encourage bicycle riding by both visitors and residents alike and provide educational opportunities for community members. It is recommended that the City of Charleston hire a bicycle coordinator to ensure the 2012 BIKE Plan’s implementation and numerous resulting environmental, health and economic benefits.
