Abstract
This report documents the participatory approaches used to develop four alternative masterplan design solutions from August 2008 to April 2009. The site is a twenty-four acre former Navy tank farm in North Charleston, South Carolina. The design parameters were to include affordable housing and fifteen acres of open space. Through three workshops and other participatory methods, the author used public input to create a vision and four design alternatives for the site. Four distinct plans, each with its own concept, housing typologies, housing configurations, and street typologies, were created to give Metanoia, a community development corporation, several alternative visions for this abandoned site that would provide a vibrant open space and affordable housing for existing and future residents.
