Abstract

The key point of this thesis project investigation is "health" and the main topic of this study is "people". The overall goal is to explore design strategies to convert outdoor spaces into therapeutic gardens for everyday well-being. The basis of this thesis design investigation is the analysis of the user needs of the USC School of Medicine in Greenville, South Carolina and the surrounding community, along with an analysis of the characteristics of the adjacent outdoor space fronting Grove Road. The guiding design principles in terms of healthy environment, is be based on a theory that the healing properties of outdoor spaces should satisfy the demands of multiple user groups. The analysis of five cases and the case study method served as the basis for formulating design strategies and ideas for ways to spatially organize the outdoor space; the goal was that the healing function would provide psychological and spiritual support for different users and a sense of well-being.
