This syllabus is for a 200-level course that serves as the foundation course for an interdisciplinary minor in Community and Civic Engagement. While this particular course is cross-listed in the departments of Sociology, Political Science, and Peace and Social Justice, it is designed to draw students from all disciplines who are interested in translating their academic interests into public-facing work. The course gives students an overview of different pathways to engagement (e.g., volunteering, policy advocacy, running for political office, community organizing) as well as opportunities to participate in them. Through engagement with course texts and guest speakers, students hone their ability to articulate and assess the strengths and limitations of these different pathways for achieving various goals. Most applicable/adaptable to: Sociology, Political Science, and Peace and Social Justice
