Summary
Common and southern rust are two diseases associated with corn in the southern United States. Spores from both common and southern rust move via wind currents from tropical regions each growing season into the southern corn producing regions of the US. Management of common and southern rust starts with planting resistant varieties and then scouting corn for both pathogens to determine if a fungicide spray is necessary.
