Abstract
Ultra-High Performance Concrete can be a very good material for use in repair works. The ability of chloride ions to pass through repaired concrete layers is suppressed if an impermeable concrete like UHPC is used. However, thickness of the UHPC layer and the orientation of the repair layer relative to the direction of chloride ingress may influence its effectiveness. This study is an attempt to evaluate the effect of varying thicknesses and cross sections areas of UHPC over a precast concrete and the direction of the UHPC layers relative to the direction of chloride ion movement on the resistance offered against the ingress. The fresh and hardened properties of UHPC were investigated followed by the bond strength of UHPC with precast concrete substrate, as a function of which material is cast first. The rapid chloride penetration test was used to evaluate resistance of the composite specimens to chloride penetration. The results indicate that the order of casting the composite specimen, when UHPC layer is placed on a hardened concrete or whether conventional concrete is cast first, and the orientation of the interface between UHPC and precast concrete can play an important role in the resistance to chloride ion penetration
