Abstract
Nursing burnout (NBO) is an increasing concern, with nearly two-thirds of nurses experiencing burnout and considering leaving the nursing profession (American Nurses Foundation, 2022). Recognized in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as a syndrome related to chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed (World Health Organization, 2019b), it can cause anxiety, depression, frustration, tangible pain, and decreased work efficacy (American Nurses Foundation, 2020). With a projected global shortage of 4.1 million nurses by 2030 (World Health Organization, 2025) and a current shortage of 5.8 million (2025), addressing burnout is critical to workforce retention. The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) (2019) associated NBO with long hours, poor patient outcomes and operational challenges. This DNP project evaluated the impact of the American Nurses Foundation (ANF) Well-Being Initiative on nurse burnout and job satisfaction at an academic health center. The intervention included tools such as mobile apps, counseling, podcasts, and wellness strategies. Burnout levels were measured using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) before and after the intervention. Project findings included a reduction in overall nurse burnout, as measured by a statistically significant decrease in the median total CBI scores from the pre-intervention 56.15 to post-intervention 43.85 ( Z = -2.48, p = .013) and work-related burnout with pre-intervention median score of 62.50 and post-intervention work-related burnout of 50.00 (Z = -2.36, p = .018) using Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test analyses. While role satisfaction remained largely unchanged, most nurses reported a high level of commitment to the organization. Key Words: nursing, burnout, Copenhagen Burnout Inventory
