Abstract
The purpose of this study was to increase ESOL student engagement in a middle school setting. The study analyzes the correlation between teacher empathy and student engagement and whether empathy can be built in teachers through professional development sessions. The findings show there is statistical significance related to utilizing translanguaging strategies to build multilingual learner engagement and that professional development can support building empathy in teachers.
