Abstract
Since the 2010 Patent Protection and Affordable Care Act is so young, very little is known about the effects that the policies that it will put in place will have on our nation's health care system moving forward. Recent releases by the U.S. Census Bureau and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention allow for a thorough analysis of one of the first policies, the adult dependent coverage policy for people under the ages of 26, put into place by this piece of legislation in 2011. The economic models run in this paper look at the strengths and the weaknesses of this policy in its first year of implementation. The findings in this paper, combined with the results of the 2011 U.S. Census Survey on Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage, paint a picture that the new policy put into place is having significant effects in lowering the rate of the uninsured for the 18 to 25 year old age demographic. The strength of this paper lies in analysis done to look at the people that this new policy is benefiting most.
