Abstract

The aging farm population, increasing agricultural asset values and volatile farm financial solvency levels raise concerns for future estate tax obligations, thus increasing the need for farm succession plans. This study identifies farmer perspectives on succession planning and estate tax implications on simulated future farm estates. Through survey assessment, Southeastern farmers revealed primary barriers of financial support for both the younger and older generations via specialized workshops available at any time are the most desired resources. Monte Carlo simulations found that under different tax threshold levels no case farm estates had any tax obligation.
