Abstract
My work is primarily in drawings and prints. I use woodcuts for a rawness and textural quality that provide a unique energy for the images I create. Using charcoal and pastels in the drawings, the images can be worked and reworked to achieve the desired look and mood. This give and take of the media allows me more interaction and a sense of discovery with he work. I use isolated and exaggerated figures to help express the idea of struggle. The figure and surrounding space are, in a sense, symbolic of man in his struggle with emotional and spiritual forces. The work expresses my visions of the emotional and spiritual struggle of all mankind, of Afro-Americans, and of myself. I use the work as a self-portrait and as a symbol for the struggles of Afro-Americans. More importantly, I work to make an expression about the emotional and spiritual struggles of all people.
