Summary

The use of mechanized harvesting equipment in the logging operations increases the production per unit time. Therefore, there is an increasing trend in the use of mechanized harvesting systems. However, mechanized harvesting not only increases productivity but also causes several negative environmental impacts. Soil compaction is a common problem associated with harvesting. This article describes the factors affecting soil compaction, effects of soil compaction, and suggests some prevention and mitigation strategies. A landowner will understand the importance of best management practices implementation during harvesting.
