Abstract
This quiz is designed to ensure students’ understanding of how to register and vote in North Carolina and is adaptable for use by faculty in other states. It may be used as a standalone activity, either during class time or as homework, or in conjunction with a guest presentation by a state, county, parish, or tribal elections official; completed individually or in groups; and completed on paper or via a learning management system. In my course, the quiz will be completed during the final exam period, when a state elections official will present a voter education seminar titled “Voter Registration,” with their grade for attendance and completion of the quiz counting as 10 percent of their course grade. This seminar includes detailed information about the legal qualifications to vote and complete a voter registration application, the methods of registering to vote, the state’s recent voter photo identification requirements, and key considerations when implementing a voter registration drive. I arranged for the seminar by completing the NC State Board of Elections’ “Seminar Request” form via https://www.ncsbe.gov/about-elections/seminar-requests; states other than North Carolina (as well as county, parish, or tribal elections offices) might offer similar opportunities.
