Abstract
This online exhibit looks at the people, ideas, events and place which merged together to create a land grant college in the upstate of South Carolina in the late 19th century. It is a story of circumstances, perseverance, tragedy, politics, exclusion and compromise, reflecting the complicated times in which it occurred. The exhibit covers over 100 years of history and incorporates primary source materials from Clemson University Libraries’ Special Collections and Archives including the Thomas Clemson Papers, Benjamin Ryan Tillman Papers and Richard Wright Simpson Papers.
