Abstract

Healing garden that as one part of the hospital setting needs to consider about a connection between exposure to nature and improved healing, less medication use, shorter hospitalizations, and decreased anxiety and stress among patients, family members, and staff. Hospital is special environment that has different types of users, such as patients, doctors, and so on. Every type of users has their demands. This research is focusing on study the healing elements can be used in the healing garden and learn the different types of users’ demands. The literature review will study the definition and history of healing garden, and define the users group and their demands. This study will mainly use the case study research methods. Use this research method to analysis six different cases of healing garden for a hospital setting. According to these different types of healing garden, analysis the basic healing elements for a healing garden in the hospitals. Different healing elements have different healing functions. It can satisfy the users to close the nature, get the physical and mental healing in the natural environment. The healing elements can help to create a diversified and multifunctional healing garden for a hospital setting. The results of this research can be used as the design guidelines for designing the healing garden for Oconee Medical Campus in Seneca, South Carolina that has little natural space near the hospital area for patients, visitors, and staffs to close to the nature and relax.
