Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was any significant correlation between an athletes' knowledge, attitude, and behavior in regards to hydration and how well they maintained their level during preseason training. 74 athletes completed surveys that measured their knowledge, attitude, and behavior in regards to hydration. 59 athletes allowed monitoring of their hydration status via weight charts. Significant differences in knowledge and behavior scores were found between demographic variables such as class year, training intensity, and team. There were no significant correlations discovered between any of the survey scores and the data from the weight charts. Hydration is an important aspect of nutrition, and should not be overlooked by anyone especially athletes. By continued education, and better monitoring of hydration status future problems with dehydration may be avoided.
